Welcome to the
British Society of Myofunctional Therapy (BSMFT)
The BSMFT is dedicated to advancing Myofunctional Therapy (MFT), also known as Orofacial Myology, through an interdisciplinary, evidence-based approach. Our mission is to promote clinical excellence, research, and collaboration among healthcare professionals.
We strive to enhance clinical practice, support scientific research, and foster teamwork among Dental Care Professionals (DCPs), speech therapists, and allied health professionals to improve patient outcomes. Through education, professional development, and shared knowledge, we empower practitioners in the UK and beyond.
Led by a board of experienced clinicians, BSMFT is committed to developing best practices, facilitating knowledge exchange, and promoting multidisciplinary collaboration.
What is Myofunctional Therapy?
Myofunctional Therapy (MFT) focuses on correcting dysfunctional muscle patterns of the face, mouth, and throat. It helps improve breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speech by retraining the muscles and optimizing oral function. This therapy is used to address conditions such as tongue thrust, mouth breathing, and orofacial muscle imbalances.
Whether you’re a clinician or researcher, join us in shaping the future of MFT

OMD & OMT Explained
OMD
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. OMDs can directly and/or indirectly affect breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth and development, chewing, swallowing, speech, occlusion, TMJ movement, dental hygiene, the stability of orthodontic treatment, facial aesthetics and more.
Therapy
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is the “neuromuscular re-education or re-patterning of the orofacial muscles.” This therapy includes facial and tongue exercises and behaviour modification techniques, to promote proper tongue position and improved breathing, chewing and swallowing.
