Code of Conduct for Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) Practitioners in the UK
The British Society of Myofunctional Therapy (BSMFT) is the leading UK authority for safe, ethical, and clinically sound Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) practice. All members are required to adhere to the following Code of Conduct to maintain professionalism, patient safety, and clinical integrity.
1. General Professional Standards
All BSMFT members must:
- Act with integrity, honesty, and professionalism.
- Maintain confidentiality and obtain informed consent.
- Practice only within verified training and legal scope in the UK.
- Hold professional indemnity insurance covering UK practice.
- Communicate clearly, safely, and respectfully, including demonstrating English proficiency.
- Provide accurate representation of qualifications, training, and experience.
- Disclose and avoid conflicts of interest.
2. OMT-Specific Standards
- Practice only within the non-regulated scope of OMT in the UK.
- Non-UK-registered practitioners may not perform regulated dental or speech therapy acts.
- UK-registered dental or speech therapy practitioners may integrate OMT only within their statutory scope.
- BSMFT post-nominals reflect verified training, advanced modules, or fellowship, not statutory registration.
- Use safe, evidence-informed techniques and maintain competence through continuing professional development.
- Clearly inform clients that OMT is non-regulated and define the scope of services.
3. Directory & Public Profile Standards
- Maintain accurate and professional profiles in the public Practitioner Directory.
- Collaborators Directory (Members-only) must maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
- Misleading post-nominals or abbreviations implying UK statutory registration are prohibited.
- All public profiles must include the disclaimer:
“OMT and BSMFT post-nominals reflect verification only and do not imply UK statutory registration.”
4. Compliance & Enforcement
- All members undergo rigorous verification of training, credentials, and professional background.
- Breaches of this Code may result in formal warning, suspension, or termination of membership.
- BSMFT reserves the right to audit profiles, training, and practice compliance at any time.
- This Code aligns with UK legal standards and professional ethics for non-regulated therapy practice.
