Regulation & Compliance

Myofunctional Therapy (UK)

Myofunctional therapy addresses the function and development of the orofacial, head and neck muscles, including tongue posture, breathing, swallowing, chewing and oral habits. In the UK, its regulation depends on the professional background of the practitioner.

Dentistry

Dentists & DCPs

GDC Position

The General Dental Council does not specifically list myofunctional therapy within its Scope of Practice. However, dental professionals may provide it when:

  • It aligns with their registered role

  • They have appropriate training and competence

  • They hold suitable indemnity cover

  • They comply with Standards for the Dental Team

Myofunctional therapy integrates naturally into many dental disciplines, including orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, airway‑focused dentistry and preventive care.

BSMFT partners with AllMedPro to support indemnity needs. Vetted members receive:

  • Myofunctional therapy cover added free of charge to an existing dental policy

  • 25% discount when transferring from another indemnity provider via BSMFT

HCPC Position

SLTs are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. Although SLT standards cover head and neck function, myofunctional therapy is not specifically named, protected or defined by the HCPC.
SLTs may offer myofunctional therapy when:

  • It falls within their scope and competence

  • They have appropriate training and supporting evidence

  • Their indemnity covers this area of practice

  • They adhere to HCPC standards

Professional Guidance

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists supports:

  • Evidence‑based practice

  • Ongoing CPD

  • Safe, ethical professional conduct

BSMFT supports SLTs through:

Indemnity

  • SLTs must ensure their indemnity explicitly covers myofunctional therapy.

  • AllMedPro’s BSMFT discount currently applies only to DCP members, not SLTs

  • BSMFT can assist SLTs in securing suitable additional cover through alternative providers
